Nigeria Secures 7th Place Globally for International Students in the USA
In the academic year 2023/2024, Nigerian student enrollment at U.S. colleges and universities surged to 20,029, reflecting a remarkable 13.5% increase compared to the previous year, as reported in the 2024 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange. This report highlights a historic milestone, with U.S. institutions welcoming a record-breaking 1,126,690 international students, marking an unprecedented high for global enrollment.

This achievement coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Open Doors Report, which serves as a vital benchmark for international educational exchange in the United States. Nigeria stands out with its impressive number of students, solidifying its status as the leading source of international students from Africa and ranking 7th worldwide.

Nigerian scholars contribute immense diversity, unique perspectives, and academic rigor to the U.S. educational landscape, enhancing the learning experience for all. With over 55% of these students pursuing graduate-level studies, they exemplify a strong commitment to academic excellence and advanced education.

The rising interest among Nigerian students in U.S. higher education underscores both the dedication of American institutions to providing high-quality education and the eagerness of Nigerian scholars to engage in global academic experiences. This trend also emphasizes the significance of fostering people-to-people connections that deepen mutual understanding and strengthen ties between Nigeria and the United States.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, student mobility has experienced a remarkable growth of 13% in 2023/24, maintaining its position as the fastest-growing region for international students for the second consecutive year, following an 18% rise in 2022/23. The influx of Nigerian students is a testament to the robust educational relationship between the U.S. and Nigeria.

The Open Doors Report is an annual publication produced by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in collaboration with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Its release coincides with International Education Week, an initiative dedicated to promoting global awareness and inspiring future leaders to pursue their studies in the United States.
